DIY pull out kitchen ?

We have a Chaparral 355 5er that we love. It sleeps up to 10 people. We usually have between 5 and 8 people in it when we camp. This means we are frequently cooking a lot of large meals.

One thing we don't like is that we seem to do a lot of cooking in our trailer, instead of outside it. Its got a decent kitchen with the usual oven with 3 burner stove/oven, microwave, sink and no surplus of counter space. It doesn't have the outside kitchen that some of the new trailers have.

One thing that keeps us from cooking outside is the setup time/effort. Our trailer is plumbed with an external propane outlet but its a pain to pull out the BBQ and stove, set them up (on a picnic table?). As well, its a pain cooking outdoors without a decent work surface, sink or microwave. As well, some of the areas we camp in require that all cooking equipment be stored away whenever you aren't in the campsite due to the potential of attracting wildlife, like bears. This means we are constantly taking out and putting away cooking equipment.

I'm wondering if I can improve this situation.

Our 5er has a 48" wide x 28" high door to the pass through storage under the bedroom. It's also under the awning. I'm toying with the idea of building a light steel frame that slides out from the pull through storage and mounting a gas cooktop, small BBQ, sink, microwave and work surface to it. The assembly would simply slide out from the pull through storage bay when you wanted to use it and slide back in when you are done with it.

I've got a 36" 5 burner natural gas cooktop left over from a house renovation. It's fairly light in weight. It has a 120V automatic ignition system, but one could also light the burners manually. At 36", it is wider than I would like, but the price is definitely right. And 5 big burners would allow cooking of several things at once in decent sized pots !

I've also got a sink. Small microwaves are fairly inexpensive. I've also got a small propane table top BBQ that works really well.

The storage bay is nearly 8 feet wide with a door on each side. We don't use all the space in it and it usually holds the BBQ and the cook stove.

The cook top is 36" wide. The BBQ is about 24". That leaves 3 feet for a sink and work surface, which could fold out from the frame ?

Ideas, thoughts, comments on how one could throw this together ?
  • Here is a mock up I just pulled together. Sorry for the poor quality images.

The SS frame is left over from another project. It is too heavy to reuse on this project.

The cook top is pretty big and heavy. About 50 pounds. I think I'll try to find something smaller and lighter.

    I uncovered 2 issues.

    1) The floor in my storage bay drops down after the frame rails. This means it isn't simple to pull the frame out to the edge of the trailer.

    2) The master bathroom laundry chute is right where the kitchen frame would slide. Its on the other side of the storage bay. I can probably work around that though.

I'm starting to think I should put the whole frame on wheels so that it easily slides out of the storage bay but can also be wheeled around and positioned anywhere on the camp site.

My BBQ needs to be cleaned !

Not much room left over for a sink and work surface. Let alone a microwave and/or fridge. I'd also like to have a drawer and/or cupboard ?

I need to think about this a bit more. Ideas are welcome.
  • Those slides sure are nice.

I was going to do the kitchen slide out by putting plastic slider feet on the frame so it slides on the carpet floor of the storage bay. I'd hold it up with 2 legs outside the storage bay. Maybe I need to reconsider this.

However, those slider units only allow the slide to be extended 2/3rds of the way out. About 60". My sliding system would allow it to be extended the full 90 inches. I could also have a second set of legs on the slider end so it could stand independently from the trailer.

I thought about the dorm style refrigerator. Wife says we don't need one outside. Not sure what to think of that.

Now that I've seen the sliders, I'm considering one for storing the rest of the stuff in the storage bay.
  • X2 on Bumpy's slide out and I would add provisions for legs on the ground when extended for stability. You didn't mention a dorm-type refrigerator which many outdoor kitchens provide but with only 28" of head room your options for that are limited. Can you get your countertop and stove high enough to work comfortably? Maybe add some storage drawers underneath. Countertops are commonly 2 feet deep and you have a 4 foot width-two parallel slides or just one?
Two-sided hinged work surface(s) that sits over the stove and fold out-maybe split it into two surfaces that can flip out fore and aft (front and rear?) to allow two people to work. Put a sprayer on that sink faucet or maybe just use a small RV-type showerhead-good for all sorts of things- washing food, filling large pots, cleanup, keeping the cook cool :-) etc.

Just some thoughts, hope it helps.
  • they sell kits for slide out storage in basement compartments. IIRC they are also rated for weight capacity.
