Fix might be as simple as a new Shrader valve in the stem. There were a fairly large batch of bad valves in the news a couple years ago, and it's possible you have one. Cheap fix, but you are 100% right, to fix it, you need to know it's bad, and THAT requires inspection and paying attention to details.
