Do you use your external gas grill?

We're new to the 5'er world, having bought a 2012 Cougar 26SAB in a private sale last month. The portable grill looks like it was barely used by the previous owner and, since we've only done a short weekend run so far, I've not yet tried to set it up on the mounting rack or connect it.

However we're taking a long 2 week trip to Nova Scotia and this grill will be our only outdoor cooking option for a couple of stopover nights on the way up and back. Wondering how often experienced 5'er owners use theirs.

Also, and I think I have this right but would like confirmation. I'm guessing the smart way to use it is to connect the gas hose to your backup LP tank and disconnect it when finished.

  • Both of my Jayco TT's had the RVQ grills that attached to the side of the trailer. Used them all the time, with no ill effects to the side of the camper, or the awning above. You should have a quick connect fitting if your unit came with the grill. My current 5th wheel came with the quick connect propane fitting so I adapted my table top grill to connect to it. It's great to not have to remember to buy the small 1 lb bottles or lug around an extra tank. I made a 12' long hose so I can set the grill where I want it.
  • I ditched the bumper mounted (swing arm) grill with quick connect that came on my fiver because it looked like junk. Instead I use my Weber Q220 connected to the factory quick connect propane supply at the rear bumper with 10 foot hose.
I place the grill on a portable table wherever I want it within 10 feet of the quick connect. This set up works well for me.

Me too. Gas grills suck, IMO. Always charcoal (natural lump) for me.

I bring one of my Big Green Eggs with me on all trips.

We have never used ours that come with the RV's Think I have two brand new in a box in the garage never opened haha... I was never excited like the other post here of having all that heat so close to to the side of the trailer. I modified my a small table to fit my side track.

We setup the COLEMAN ROADTRIP grill and use that when camping using the 1LB propane canisters. Wouldn't leave home without one. Ours is in a nice wheeled tote bag and we carry it in the bed of the truck. The main thing I like about the ROADTRIP is it has a reservoir for water under the grill tops which makes for very easy cleanup each day and also allows different type of griddles to be used... What you see here is all packed up in a nice rolling tote bag...

I wondered about that but keep forgetting to look for it ... thanks! :)

  • We didn't get that option and I'm sure those who have it will add their opinions. I have heard that most are positioned very close to the RV and heat from them may damage or affect the side. Yours may swing out far enough where it won't cause heat or splatter. Good luck
