DW wants to learn to drive our 5er...

I am a 100% Disabled Vet and really enjoy our lifestyle of Full Timing!

My DW wants to ease my driving burden by sharing in this responsibility but would feel more comfortable (maybe I would) if she had an RV Driving Class.

Any suggestions? I know that you have to get behind the wheel and put some miles on to actually learn and I am a good driver/teacher. I have been pulling trailers (construction and Military) since I was 16, and RVing for the past 12 years...but my DW is still pretty green when it comes to trailering.

Thanks for any suggestions!

  • My wife said she didn't want to drive but thought she should be able to, our TT was only 28 ft then. She said not in town or in the city only the interstate. One day I said my back hurt would she like to drive and she said yes if I get her to the interstate. On the entrance frame I got out and in the back seat to lay down, next thing I know she is asking if she should drive all the way home or would I like to stop for lunch. She only had to try and said it was nothing. She still won't back up but doesn't mind driving in the city or heavy traffic with our 34 ft TT.

I'm another whose wife drives (only forward so far- but she's about ready to try parking). It lets me work while we're on the road so that I don't eat up vacation time.

reminds me of a couple years ago.. needed to be on a conf call, so we pulled over to switch drivers.. closed the doors, walked around, both pulled on the handles together.. locked!..

the dogs had run across and stepped on the door lock button.. doah!.

our phones, the keyless door code, the tools, all inside the locked truck or trailer..

finally flagged someone down that was willing to call a locksmith (an hour away).. took him 10 seconds to open the door..

    missed the conference call!

that keyless code is burned into my eyeballs now!
  • We have not started yet just bought a Class A, but I (Sally) plan to drive, I will ease into it. I and my husband want and need to know that I can get us home if something were to happen to him. God forbid. I want to start in a large large parking lot with turns, backing up and such. I do not really want to drive through a city, I would rather take over when we are on a highway or something. But I am going to do it, I taught him to drive a boat and dock it properly, it is his turn to teach me to drive a Motorhome. Let her drive, you can take a nap in the passenger seat.

  • Only way she will become less 'green' is to let her drive.
my DW shares the driving all the time.. and we had an event a couple years ago with our show truck, where I didn't feel well enough to drive and she got us home without issue (and in record time!)
  • A college campus parking lot on a Sunday is pretty empty.
  • My DW pulls our 40' 5er.. She is just fine on the back roads and middle roads... She still has to get comfortable on the highway... Let her go !! ! Just be ready to correct her and show her the way.. You both will be fine...Good Luck..
  • Let her drive. Start in an open parking lot so she can get the feel for turning, then travel some back roads. If she WANTS to, she will! And she'll be GOOD at it.

I insisted my wife learn how to drive, hitch, unhitch, set-up, tear down, back-up, and park all our campers and tow vehicles, and cars, and lawn mower, and tractor, and everything! IN THE EVENT I BECOME INCAPACITATED I WANT THE ASSURANCE SHE CAN ALWAYS MAKE IT BACK HOME, that's she's independent of me! I just never know what COULD happen (to me). One whack of the head on that slide-out and I could be "out" for months! I KNOW she can get the entire rig back home and safe!

Let her drive! As much as she wants, under any conditions she wants! Be glad she wants to. Far too many spouses don't want to. I feel for the primary driver in the event an emergency were to happen!
