- twindmanExplorerIf you stop in E. Glacier you probably do not want to take the shortcut of MT highway 49. I did and made it fine, but they had some landslides and sections of the road were gravel and no side rails. Some places looked to be maybe 1000 feet straight down. There was some shoulder tho - probably 6 feet on the side of the road.
It is probably really pretty too, but alas, I had to drive and watch the road!!! - Army11BravoExplorer III drive that stretch of road often, both with and without my trailer. Since you are driving it in August, there are no worries. It's very scenic and safe, but just one lane in each direction most of the way. If you were traveling now, the snow and ice would make it tougher to navigate. Be sure to stop at Marias Pass. It's a rest stop with great trailer parking on the continental divide with interesting historical markers. There are usually trains driving by.

Hi... I've traveled from Calgary to the Kalispell area many times with my 5th. My favorite route for 'ease of drive' is Alberta Hwy 2 south & cross the border at Carway (south of Cardston). The highway becomes Hwy 89 in the U.S. Follow it to Duck Lake Road (Hwy 464) and take that to Browning. This cuts out some steep windy parts of the drive on Hwy 89 to Browning. From Browning, take U.S. Hwy 2 to the Kalispell area. The most scenic part of the drive will be the stretch from Browning to Kalispell along U.S. Hwy 2.
Enjoy the your trip :)

We are going the first week of Aug - rastonExplorerHi... I've traveled from Calgary to the Kalispell area many times with my 5th. Enjoy the your trip :) - Pangaea_RonExplorerThe highway is fine, depending on the time of year and construction activity. Stop and explore the Isaac Walton Inn near Essex on your way through.
We spent the night parked behind the Snow Slip Inn near Essex in the middle of a blizzard. It was a great night, and a well considered decision. - Gary42ExplorerIf you are crossing at Sweetgrass Mt, the road to Shelby is good. Fuel up there, HWY 2 to the west is a good road, but open country, not too many services. As you get closer to Kalispell Mt, many more services. Good scenery in the area around Glacier Park.
- campinghutExplorerI have traveled that road a few times and it is fine.
- naturistNomadIt's been a couple years since I drove that route, but I don't recall there being any problem areas. It is, as others have said, a two lane road through some beautiful country. And by all means, do take your time and enjoy the scenery. This time of year it'll be snow up to here, of course, but in summer it should be simply beautiful. You didn't say when you have in mind traveling it, but I'd assume warm weather. Well, as warm as it gets there.
- Between East and West Glacier is mostly two lanes. It is narrow with minimum shoulders in place. Pay attention to signs. Take your time. It is a scenic road.
