Excessive Tire Wear

I have a 2015 Jayco Octaine Toy Hauler (two axle). I often haul a 960 Lb motorcycle in the back, usually for a few thousand miles a year. A week ago we traveled from Columbus, Ohio to Islamorada in the Florida Keys. Upon our return we made it as far as Lynchburg VA before I found that a rear tire had blown. Upon close inspection both tires on the rear axle had excessive (visible chord) on the inside of the tire while good tread remained on the rest of the tire. It was as though the axle had bowed out, maybe because of the weight of the heavy bike? Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Should this be expected or do I have a big problem? Thanks for any input. Larry Rinehart
  • Axle Alignment
    Over loaded

    To find out which....

Weigh trailer. Check weighed axle vs axle ratings/tire ratings

    Check axle alignment----Easy DIY method
  • I had a 1998 Terry 24' pull trailer. I made a trip to Oklahoma from Idaho and almost wore out on the inside edge of all my tires. The steel chords were showing. I was advised that my axle was out of alignment. Had them realigned and it cured the problem
  • I've had two blow outs on great tires the PSI is always inflated to Max. I just think it's from sitting and not turning it wears the tires as well. And I wasn't over loaded either!
  • I noticed that the wear on my rear axle's tires is a lot more than the others (triple axle). I'm going to need to rotate them a lot more often-- maybe twice a season.

I'm getting new shoes tomorrow, so I'll set myself a calendar reminder.
  • Rinehart I see it's a 2015, how many miles on it? How did the tires look before the trip? And the biggest question, what brand of tires do you have on it?
  • Our rig is a 2 axle, 19,400 actual weight TH and I carry a 900+ pound Goldwing. We've travelled 28,000 miles and I've seen no unusual tire wear. We have had one blowout, but I suspect the tire brand and age as it'd been a spare I had to use. The sets I've replace have had pretty even wear. I do use a TPM system and rarely travel over 65 mph.

with all that said, it is possible for the axle to be bent and cause excessive outer or inner wear. If you're still under warranty, I'd contact the manufacturer. Otherwise, you need to find a good trailer place that specializes in this as they can check if the axle is true. I'd not use a dealer unless warranty requires it. I don't think most are expert enough.
