- azrvingExplorerOn jimnlin's advice I went to 16's with Firestone transforce tires. With 33 inch axle spacing I ended up with two inches between the tires. They are very heavy duty compared to the old Marathons. I took the 5er to our tire guy and let him tell me what would fit so there was no confusion. Had to watch frame clearance too. At the same time I did an axle flip, new springs, wet bolts and Dexter ez flex equalizers. It pulls perfect. Thanks Jim.
- JIMNLINExplorer IIIMoving from a 15" tire to a 16" tire has been a great upgrade for many years. Did mine the first time in the '70s. Back then trailers ran P or 15" light truck tires so moving up to 16" truck tires gave us more capacity/cooler running tires/less parasitic drag and a easier ride.
Today with only a couple of 15" LT sizes the 16" LT tires on 5k and 6k axles is the best upgrade. - Me_AgainExplorer IIIDo you have 6 lug wheels? A friend had a similar trailer and it had ample axle spacing and clearance. Smart move. Choose from many different LT tires and don't look back.
- Clearance issues will be your first thing to determine. Need to determine if you have enough space between the existing axles to accommodate the taller tires. Then it's determining if you have enough clearance to the top of the fender wells.
Do you have 5 lug or 6 lug wheels now? I don't know if they have 16" 5 lug wheels, do they? I've only really ever seen 6 lug 16" wheels..
Those are just a few things off the top of my head.. I wanted to switch my 13" wheels for 14 or 15", but no way they will clear with the current axle setup...
Good luck!
Mitch
