The vendors of the extended warranties would not be offering them unless there were big bucks to be made.
Keep the eyes open. Do the preventative maintenance. Most things that break are minor in nature & not too difficult for the average guy with a decent set of tools & ability to use them. The average DIY guy will spend less a year than what the extended warranty is going to cost.
It is good to know how to DIY anyhow. When things go wrong you are usually far from home & that dealer people trust so much.
