Generator coverage in extended service

I bought a 2011 toy hauler in June 2012 used from a CW store. Recently the generator would not continue to run unless the start button was held down. The report was the drive belt was not spinning the generator. I was informed the drive belt is not covered in the warranty and I see that listed.

I spoke to the mechanic at the CW store doing the repairs and he informed me the mail seal in the generator had failed causing pre-mature failure of the belt which was broken and wrapped around the main shaft. I ask if that failure due to the oil leak was covered under my warranty and informed the seal also was not covered.

This just seems like a push to me not to cover the repair. If the generator was 10 years old I would not question this but it is less than 2 years old with 104 hours.

  • Thank you so much for the assistance. I was only looking for some guidance and this is overwhelming support. I did get a call from the service manager stating the ESP would completely cover the repair minus the belt. Thank you again for your assistance.

Picked up my trailer. The ESP and CW covered everything on my generator. I was so surprised and happy. I purchased a new trailer jack and quite a few other items I needed for a summer trip. Thank you Good Sam for helping me out.
  • Your Good Sam ESP plan does cover seals and gaskets. The local Service Advisor simply did not call back to ESP for a second authorization after the belt was determined not to be covered. You should be getting a call from the Service Advisor who will arrange to have the repair covered through Good Sam ESP, less the cost of the belt.

Please let me know if there is anything else we can do for you.
  • Your belt would not be covered by a service contract because it is a maintenance item, but seals generally are, depending on the age of the vehicle and the plan you purchased. I will review this claim to be sure that it was handled properly and let you know what I find out.
  • Go to 5th wheel coverage click on generator also click on seals and gaskets. Your policy may be different than advertised.
  • From what I read on the web site it appears seals and gaskets on your generator are Covered (click link). You should double check your policy and inform the shop ASAP.
  • I am not sure on the type of service plan. It is a 48 month plan, pre-owned plan for a toy hauler. I don't see anything else on the front page of the service agreement. All I see in the main purchase document is the $100 deduct. I bought the Good Sam plan when we purchased the unit as this was our first. Is there somewhere else I can look? I have read the entire agreement page and the seal is not listed on anything.

I do run my generator no less than 1 time per month to keep the fuel fresh in the carb. I was warned of this problem when I bought the toy hauler.

I have not been called to pick up the unit, which I am told should be Monday, and will know more then. I was just curious if this should be covered or not. It is possible the mechanic doesn't have it correct.
  • I'm sorry your repair was not covered.

As a matter of info, in the future, to maintain good generator operation, it should be run once a month at least 30 minutes under at least half load....the more the better. This will keep the engine, generator and seals in good condition.

Personally, I never buy extended warranties or service plans. I am money ahead.
