They did and still do. Some folks don't understand that point and would have us believe some how the frame is weaker than the GAWRs.
Fleet Ford body weight specs tells us different on just every page...... which is the sum of the GAWRs can be equal to the vehicles GVWR. Both numbers are chosen by the truck makers and can be what ever they like. Fords F250/F350 SRW family is a good example with many different or same gvwr numbers on the same trucks.
Then throw in the fact the F250 has the same frame as the F350 SRW. And of course we know the F250 with the heavy service package/camper package has the same front and rear suspension as the F350 SRW.
And of course we know Ford markets a F350 SRW with a 10000 gvwr or the same exact truck in a 11500 gvwr.
GVWR or tire placard payload stickers isn't the holy grail of any trucks safe load carrying specs.
