I am fine with exceeding it I guess. However what I dont like is how much I would have to sacrafice in size to get down where I would need to be in weight. I failed to mention but right now we have a 32BH TT. So something like a 31RL fifth wheel doesnt really give us any more room. Wouldn't really be worth it I guess. Unless someone has a suggestion I am canvassing the internet looking at floorplans and GVWR/Dry Weights. Most GVWRs are around 15k-16k and dry weights are 11.5k-13k. Getting down to that 11.5k range puts us in a fifth wheel that is not any bigger than our TT now.
I would also recommend that you no longer just assume the model number equates to the length. For example, our 2014 Columbus 295RL is not 30' long, it's 34'8". It weighs 10,600# empty with a GVWR of 14,000#. We are ready to camp at 12,000#. Just year or two ago there were many fivers in that range (34-36' long, empty weight under 11K#). I must admit I had to hold the wife back or she would have wanted 40', which would not have worked with my 2500. We were able to compromise on something we both love.
Some manufacturers model numbers now relate to square feet, not the length. A model number with 32 in it could be almost 38' long in some cases. Three or four slides really bump up the square feet. Hope this helps. Keith
