- vangoesExplorerI'm currently towing with a 6.4 and a 3:73 rear so I had somewhat of a basis to compare to when I tried out a 6.7 with 3:31 gears. Personally, I did not like the ump (or lack of) that the 3:31 had taking off from a dead stop. I'm sure the 3:31 will tow our 5vers just fine on the road but I am very concerned about the wear on the tranny due to the increased torque the engines will throwing into the tranny for taking off from dead stops with the 3:31 gears. Concerned enough that I did not buy the truck. JMHO
- donpopExplorerWhen I special ordered my 2012 I ordered the 3.55 as I have a fairly heavey RV and always double tow. This was my first diesel so I was making sure I had enough power. On my previous two V10s I had special ordered with the 4.30. Also the only thing I use the truck for is towing and not as a daily driver as many will have to do.
I now have 10,000 trouble free miles and even with my heavy load I have power to spare. The average RVer will not have any problem with the 3.3l. Man I love towing with the 6.7.
Don - broark01Explorer IIAxle ratios are a little less relevant with the advent of the 6+ speed transmissions.
- keyspirateExplorerI am towing 15K and getting 15 mpg at highway speeds. 2012 srw.
- blue_trawlerExplorerI just ordered a new truck and am waiting for it. It also has the 3:31 gears! I look forward to replies. I didn't have a choice since I didn't get a 4x4! I am thinking the towing is like 22k!
