Ford versus Dodge truck for towing 40 foot 5th wheel

I have a 2009 F250 right now and we just purchased a 2012 40 foot Alpine fifth wheel. I am wondering if we should get a dually truck and if we should go with a Ford or Dodge. I have had real good luck with this Ford except we had to replace the transmission due to putting on a tuner which I was told made the transmission go out faster. My truck has 86,000 miles on it. We are looking at getting a fairly new used one. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.
  • The best dually hands down is the RAM. Dual air induction, best commercial grade transmission, most durable engine (don't believe me ask Ford why they offer the Cummins in the F650-750 but not the PowerStroke) strongest frame and many other class leading items and numbers. This spring they will offer rear air ride suspension on the 3500 duality's.

Bottom line try each one out with 45psi in the rear tires and 75 in the front so the ride can be judged equally.

    Oh yea best looking also!

I don't buy in to the previous post that said "dually for sure". I have a 2014 Columbus 365RL. It is 39'7" in length, 100" wide, 11,766 dry weight (mine weighed 12,120 when it left the manufacturer), and the dry hitch weight is 1,910. My tow vehicle is a 2010 F350 crew cab SRW, long bed. It tows the fiver with ease, I have never felt unsafe, and I have never exceeded the towing capacities of the truck.

You are talking a lot of fictitious numbers. Weigh your rig loaded. You may be surprised.

Try an emergency down hill lane change or have a huge gust of wind hit you and then tell us you don't need a dually!
  • Dodge has one thing going for it, the Cummins engine! With the new Asin tranny (8 speed), you should not have any problems. Ford has had problems with its engines and granny's and they will find any excuse not to stand behind them! I have heard that even if you have a tiny amount of water in the fuel they will deny warranty on the engine, even though in the US you can have up to 3% water in the fuel !

  • Dodge trucks from 7.5(6.7's) up until they added the DEF this year get low mileage and have a few issues with the smog stuff. Ford's and Chevy's have the CP4.2 injection pump and Ford seems to not want to stand behind it with a warranty!

I think the new RAM with the Aisin auto tranny and DEF is the way to go!

  • Dually for sure. As for Ford or Dodge it really comes down to personal preference. They both have good one ton trucks. Pick the one you find most comfortable and can get the best deal on. There should be some good deals out there on leftover '13s.
