Just ordered a new 5er and looking for a truck to pull it (21K GVWR).
In addition I'm trying to decide between the 3.73 and the 4.30 rear end. I understand the 4.30 has a 3K greater towing capacity (26.5K vs 23.5K) but will likely burn more fuel. I really don't understand the other advantages of the 4.30.
I pull 14k with my diesel dually with 3.73 gears, but if I was towing 50% more like you want to do, I would probably get the 4.30s.
I think it's real possible that what you will see is better mpg with the 4.30 rear end vs the 3.73 gear set when towing that heavy load. The engine won't be working as hard. The truck will accelerate better coming up on-ramps and will also work better both going up and coming down mountains.
I think the only time you might really notice the increased RPMs is when you are running down the road empty at 65-75 mph.
