Well that type of cap is not laminated, there may be some thin plywood behind it, or it may just be curved over some lateral frame members.
When you waxed it did you feel and flex in the front cap. What is the interior wall shape, is it curved like the front, or angled in to mostly match the front. Your best bet would be open up the interior a bit to see what exactly is the support for the front sheet.
