- wilber1ExplorerI don't think aerodynamic drag is much of a factor for tractors doing field work.
- RDS33ExplorerI will toss this out for the Duramax pullers with the six speed Allison. I usually pull between 60 and 65 mph.
I drop it down out of 6th to 5th. I find that the mileage does not drop off any doing this. Some short runs was actually better in 5th. There is less gear shifting when pulling hills as a added benefit. The engine is breathing well and getting more air for the fuel to burn better.
Another situation, a friend of mine helps his neighbor farm. The owner gears up lowers RPM for a field operation. He had told Don what gear and RPM he was using. When Don when out he dropped it down a gear and increased the RPM. Same field speed and acres covered.
At the end of the day fuel use was down 4 gallons. - wilber1Explorer

How many gallons per minute does a Bugatti Veyron need to tow a trailer at 250 mph? Will my ST China Bombs handle that speed?
The reason objects have a terminal velocity when falling through the air is because they reach a speed where drag increases to a level where they can no longer accelerate. That's why parachutes work. Going faster requires more power and more fuel.
The 4100 Lb Bugatti Veyron requires 1000 hp to reach its top speed of over 250 mph and burns 1.4 gal per minute in order to stay there.
Hell, the Veyron tires only last 15 minutes at that speed! :-)

That's OK, after using the fuel to get to 250, it only has enough to stay there for 12 minutes. - TopSlinkExplorerI have a 38 ft montana and an 08 dodge 3500 with kit my best diesel consumption on a straight run is 68mph and I get 14mpg in the mountains I get about 4mpg

For me, the difference between 60 and 70 is how annoyed DW is. If she's hungry or angry, I drive faster. Otherwise it's like being trapped in a burlap sack with a rabid wolverine.
Carry a box of Snickers and you'll keep Danny Trejo at bay. :-)

- Buckeye_ChuckExplorer10.2 mpg. With cruise control set at 62 mph.

I understand your point. I was trying to be funny. I had my Groucho Marx glasses on, but in hindsight I now realize that you cannot see them through the Internet.Stefonius wrote:
My point was how much power and fuel it takes to propel a very aerodynamic and comparatively light vehicle at high speed, not a heavy truck and 5er with barn door aerodynamics.wilber1 wrote:
