Fuel Station Problems

Hi Folks,

I have a 2009 40x12 XLR Toy Hauler with a fuel station. Everything has been fine until recently when it seems that everything has gone dead. It used to be that I would hit the fuel station switch and the pump would come on and the 2 fuel gauges would come on so I could see what fuel I had in there, but now dead.

I’ve checked all of the fuses I can find and none are blown. There is a switch that you hit once for the pump to come on, and once for it to go off (not just an “on-off” type setup) so that tells me there has to be some kind of relay somewhere that is managing the “on/off” actions so I wonder if that could have gone out. Any ideas please folks?

Thanks in advance for your help,

LE
  • Mine did a similar thing... the impellers got swollen and would seize up causing the pump to trip the fuse. Like Cabinetmaker, I sanded the impellers, replaced the fuse and all is well. I now keep sandpaper in my trailer tool box in case this happens again. I use vice grips to clamp the fuel line while I open up the pump. It's a ten minute (tops) job. Good luck!
  • I am not familiar with your specific setup, but many fuel stations have an inside the unit on/off switch that prevents theft by disabling the outside on/off switch. Could it be as simple as the inside switch being off?
  • I had a similar problem a while back. I used the fuel pump and everything was fine. I went to use it again a few days later and had nothing! As it turned out, the impellers internal to the pump had swollen (due to ethanol in the fuel) and would no longer turn. I disassembled the pump, sanded the plastic impellers and reassembled. Everything worked fine after that. I also contacted the pump manufacture and they sent me new impellers that are less effected by todays fuel. Bottom line, it may not be an electrical problem. While trouble shooting I noticed the pump was getting hot to the touch. That clued me into the impellers. Good luck!

  • if your gauges were coming on when switch was flipped along with the pump, ther must be some sort of relays in line to activate everything I'd check those too.

  • Lotus, do you have a multi-meter? If so, I'd check continuity across the switch with the switch ON and OFF. Next, I'd check for voltage downstream of the switch with the switch in ON. That's a start right there that will eliminate the easy stuff first.
