Generator

I have one a 6500w on an. Got it for the convince of when I need one. Fully self contained.

Me Too. I'm not a heavy user but a convenience user. Wal marts, lunch stops, overnights at a Marina, occasional boondocking. The 5'er is always fully self contained.
Full electric power is just a push button away.
No cords,gas cans, no locks, no chains,no set up. Because it is very convenient I don't hesitate to use it.
A genset is certainly not required however it does provide more options and additional flexibility when using the RV.

We have a 2011 Cameo generator ready. Found a used Onan 7000 with a few hours, and dealer installed for me. He did a great job, and muffled out most of the sound. I use it the most to charge batteries during the winter, or if a cold snap comes in after its been unwinterized, I can leave heat on and go start generator every 2-3 days. Really glad I have it. Also use it to run heater or air cond., before we get to RV park.

We travel FHU when possible and electric/water when absolutely necessary and so have never needed one.

We do have a portable (wheelable) 6,500 watt generator to power the house in the event of another hurricane. Charlie taught a lot of Floridians about generators.

We dry camp twice a year... For us the twin EU 2000's work perfectly.....no need to lug that extra weight around.. And space eater... That's just us...I do know folks that like to stop in rest stops..truck stops..walmarts..while traveling..in that case , an onboard generator would be best

I put a Honda 3000 in the truck bed bolted down with power fan vented metal cover. On longer stays I run my power cord up to the gen. Have a remote fob inside. Wife can even start it for hair dryer, micro, toaster, battery charge. Don't have to get out of my chair. Barely hear it.

When I need it I want it. All depends on how you camp.

Seems to be fairly rare to find a genset in a FW. We did some longterm dry camping at Key West and ran a Honda 3000i roughly six hours a day to recharge batteries and run the AC on really hot days. All depends on what type of camping you do.

The dash air does significant cooling in a Motorhome while traveling down the road. A fifth wheel doesn't have that advantage. I'd lean towards having a portable Yamaha 3000 Sieb with a remote start kit on a rack at the back.

It appears you answered your own question if you don't use the one you have on your current rig. It boils down to how you plan to camp and if that is predominately with hookups it is not worth the investment to have one onboard. A portable 2K watt genny might come in handy down the road should you need to charge your batteries or power something small when hookups are unavailable.
