Genny Exhaust From PU Bed

Sometimes i get the idea that folks may be running the genny in the PU bed while staying hooked up overnight.

I am paranoid about the exhaust, but probably just that.

Is there any data out there on how safe or unsafe this is?

  • I've only tried to run mine at night parked at a walmart and a rest area. most of the time the generator runs in the truck bed while I am behind the steering wheel, driving, or in the mornings - and it's usually at the end of 50ft of cord.

it doesn't have enough power to run my A/C, and I have lots of batteries so unless it's time to recharge, I have little need to run it.

My generator is secured to the tailgate corner in my truck bed. When I use it I just pull it out on to the tail gate and fire it off...

If I point the exhaust at my trailer I can set off the Co detector just about everytime. Of course my OFF-ROAD POPUP is not sealed all that much as a regular hard side TT might be.

After I found out I can do this to my POPUP I am now always conscious on where my 2KW Generator is pointed at when being run... Obviously I don't point it at the Fuel Can either...

I guess your camping grounds don't have any generator run time restrictions in place. Most public campground places we go to here on the East side of the US has run time restrictions in place and usually NO Generators after 8PM at night or before 8AM in the morning...

This was my main reason for beefing up my battery banks so I could do all my things I wanted to do off the batteries and only use my 2KW generator after 8AM in the morning when allowed to use it...

  • I've tried but the NOISE got to me before any CO did (alarm never went off), front bedroom trailer... even the "quiet" yamaha 2000 still sounds loud without any other reference noise to drown it out.
  • I CARRY MY GEN IN THE FRONT OF MY LONG BED TRUCK AND (sorry caps) use the 20-25 ft long 30a extension and a 50a to 30a converter cord. MY gen sits about 5 foot from the nose of my camper and then my bedroom is behind the closet and nose of this thing. the CO detector is mounted on the wall towards the front of the camper. I would do this if I had too. BUT so far its only been trial runs. been trying to figure out a way to have this working while going down the road.

Put a CO monitor in the bedroom and, if it goes off while the genny's running, you know there's an issue. I've had more of an issue with a genny setting off the **** LP detector than the CO detector, and that was on a 50' power cord.
