getting ready to roll

newby here, about to get the b&w hitch in our new 2013 dodge ram 2500 and our new to us 2004 hr savoy which i am getting delivered to the house tomorrow. i had a rough time finding a hitch for the 2013 ram as they changed the frame or someting, i thought a person could just go anywhere and get a hitch installed. i enjoy reading posts on here and any advice would be welcome. i know there is lots to learn but the "dw" and i are quick learners. we never had a fifth wheel, our last was a hybrid cub we had for a year, before that a popup for a year before that a tent for 30 years haha.
  • we are looking forward to it. just got the trailer home and dw is setting up the inside since i am at work. we plan on a few little trips close to home for a couple weeks then off for first long trip for a week and a half about 1800 mile round trip. we were just planning to stay in hotels but now are taking our hotel with us guess we will learn haha.
  • Your story sounds very similar to my wife and myself . Just to much to sleep on the ground . We have had our 5er for 3 years now. You will adjust it's great fun .
  • thanks bear will do. i have never driven a pickup with fifth wheel but have big trucks. its been a while tho. am looking forward to our adventures.
  • Used to be you could go to the local welding shop and have a hitch installed. They would fabricate the base to fit the truck. Now the hitch companies make sepcific models to fit each truck setup. Unfortunately there is a lag between the time when a truck design is changed and the demand for a hitch catches up.

Good luck with your new setup and enjoy. Take it out to a big parking lot and practice backing into tight spaces and do a few panic stops to see how everything reacts just in case.
