Giving up gas/diesel credit cards

I am giving up the gas/diesel credit cards for what seems to be a better idea -- a MC or VISA rewards card.

Anyone have suggestions on which one is the best one to have? I've been looking at the SHELL or BP cards.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

  • I use a southwest visa rapid rewards card.Gives me points towards flights.Every one dollar spent on card is one point.Wanna get away flights on southwest run around 6000 points .. So every 6k spent on card is a free flight. We put absolutely everything we buy on card and pay balance off monthly so no interest..Fee per yr is 75 dollars. We end up with about 12 free flights a yr.IBut if you cant pay the balance off monthly dont get it..For that matter dont use a credit card in my opinion if balance isnt paid monthly.
  • Speedway Super America is common where I live. They have a free rewards card that you can get credit for any purchase at the station regardless of how you pay.

They also have a Speedway Mastercard that you can tie to your rewards number and get points for every purchase regardless of what/where you use the charge.

You can double dip on points by using the Mastercard to buy Speedway gift cards then use the gift cards to pay for your purchases...

Seems complex perhaps, but I get about $75-100 of free fuel every 4-6 weeks...

PS agree on the point made below, we pay off every month, no balance carried...

Guess you have to balance the rewards value against the annual interest rate charged (if you carry a balance) and the annual fee imposed if there is one. Only familiarity I have with the Shell card is if NASCAR driver Joey Logano wins a race, your fuel purchase gas or diesel is discounted 22 cent/gal, up to a 25 gal. purchase limit the Wednesday after he wins a race. Has happened only once this season.......
