Goodyear Tires

We have often marveled at GY paying to trailer damage after a failure of a G614 or other trailer tire, which is excluded in their warranty statement.

Well the answer to that might be related to their handling for G159 tire problems.

I have also posted many times that ST were designed for local service on utility type trailers and ended up on RV trailer and extended highway use.

See if you do not see a similar situation with the G159.

"Inquiry examines tires’ link to deaths
By TOM KRISHER
The Associated Press

DETROIT — The government’s road-safety agency says it has received accusations that defective Goodyear motor-home tires caused crashes that killed or injured 95 people during the past two decades.

The allegations were revealed in an informationseeking letter dated Tuesday that was sent to Goodyear by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The agency began investigating whether the company’s G159 tires are unsafe last year after a judge ordered the release of Goodyear data that had been sealed under court orders and settlements.

Lawsuits and safety advocates say the tires were designed for delivery trucks and not for recreational vehicles that travel at highway speeds. They allege Goodyear kept the tire problems secret for years by settling cases and getting judges to seal records. The tires have not been recalled.

Goodyear said it “will cooperate fully with NHTSA in its investigation.”

The investigation covers about 40,000 tires made from 1996 to 2003. It’s not known how many G159 RV tires are still in use since production stopped."

Sadly One thing that has helped bring the G159 to this point is deaths and injuries.

A blowout or run flat on a trailer... many folks never notice. At nite I always watched for the spark show when the tire shredded down to the steel rims. Quite a show at 65 mph on a concrete highway.

With no deaths or injuries NHTSA simply doesn't care about damaged rvs as evident the many ST tire complaints dropped from their complaints website every few years.

If you go back to my old thread(Chris) about trailer tires quite a few years ago, you will see that Barry Smith(the tire engineer) made the same statement about trailer tires and personal injury.

Baloney. The problem with 'some' ST tires is the quality of manufacturer, not the design.

    X-2 on Baloney (or Balogna)!!

Wonder if the OP who "has posted many times" is a return of "Fast Eagle", who knew *everything* "ST"...:R

GY lost a lawsuit in the past due to deaths and injuries from several types of GY tires - including Marathons, which were included and indicated / admitted by GY they were *FOR* RVs.

At the time Marathons were manufactured in the USA.

  • Goodyear has struggled greatly in the past with every tire they have used on motorhomes and trailers. Poor design for the job is evident as the Marathons....Wrangler HT......G614 all used on trailers and all three had to be redesigned because they were coming apart prematurally.
The G159 may not have had the benefit of a redesign over all these years.

Lots of press about the G159 right now ....some pointing to a recall which will happen only if enough pressure from consumer groups is put on DOT/NHTSA.

  • Please site your source on ST tires were designed for "local" service. Never heard that before.
