Gray water tanks

My Hideout has two gray water tanks with one discharge valve. How do they work? Does one tank fill first and then drain into the other tank. Are there two drains leading to the one discharge valve?

This is the same for my crusader lite. except that my 2nd gray tank has a BLACK handle.

Black or gray has nothing to do with the color of the handle. It refers to the tank and the source of the waste. Every handle I've seen has been black plastic, until they fade. :)

Unless you mean to say that yours is labeled wrong. That happens sometimes at the factory.
  • I suspect you just haven't found the other gray tank discharge yet. They can be hidden pretty good and be very inconvenient. If you find that something no longer will drain inside, you will know there is another discharge point. If that doesn't happen consider yourself very fortunate that the maker actually did something right.

If there is truly only 1 valve, it means the drain lines are tee'd together somewhere under the coach. Which is fine, because the two tank levels will equalize due to gravity. Nothing wrong with that, and should be very convenient. Usually the plumbing logistics don't allow the manufacturer to do that, so you want to double check and make sure there really is only 1 gray valve.

On my rig, a black and a gray valve are in the utility bay, but a 3rd valve is hidden behind the rear axle. Pain in the rear to get to, and not obvious to find. If yours is like that, and you missed it, you would not be the first to make such a mistake.

All 4 of my waste drain valves have BLACK handles.
1 is for Black tank (toilet)
1 is for Grey tank (bathroom sink/shower)
1 is for Galley (Kitchen sink)

4th one is on common header that other 3 tie into.

But color of handle doesn't mean anything.

    OP on your Hideout'
Does black tank drain thru same drain pipe?
Usually waste tanks will have their own drain valve.

  • Usually one is for bath, other for kitchen. Should monitor separate. When one is full, drain both.
  • When there are 2 tanks, they serve different sources. We have one gray water tank that serves the master bath and another that serves the kitchen, half bath and washing machine. If you have 2 sewer outlets on the street side of your coach, you will need to use a "Y" connection to drain both or move your hose back and forth - a PITA.
