Head Northeast for the Summer from Texas?

Hi Kids! My sweetie and I still have a stick house, but have had 3-5 week adventures in our 37ft Cameo. Our flexibility is growing professionally and otherwise so we have booked a month in early May in Destin (yes, we got into the state park). After that, I'm trying to think of places we can go North to leave the Southern summer behind. It would be cool to go through Kentucky (gotta see that Ark replica) then head into Baltimore, Maine, Northern NY, etc.

My only restriction? I need to be reasonably close to an airport. Along our summer, I may have to jump a plane (a lot). A two week business journey in the air is not unusual for me.

We have never done the east coast in the rig at all. So, from Destin, where next?

Go!... :)

Safe travels!
  • Baltimore, Maine, Northern NY, etc.

You may be leaving the southern summer behind but you won't be leaving the sweltering heat behind in those locales. Unless you get up to Maine.

As for Kentucky don't miss Mammoth Cave. What do you like to do, parks-hiking-biking or more urban explorations?
  • Lake Placid NY (small airport close by). Thousand Islands Seaway.(not to sure about airports past Watertown until Plattsburg). Plattsburg, NY (Lake Champlain) (airport nearby). Burlington, VT--Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, Von Trapp Lodge (airport in Burlington), Mt Washington NH (not sure on airport).
  • New York Finger Lakes and wine country. Large airports at Syracuse and Rochester. Plenty of State Parks and Private Campgrounds to choose from. Lots of natural wonders and history to see.
  • In New York. Lake George Camping Resort is a short distance to Albany which has a larger airport. Further South. KOA Newburgh in the Hudson Valley wine country you have four to choose from Stewart small regional or the big three Laquardia, JFK & Newark. Cape Cod Camping Resort in Massachusetts, your an hour to Boston Logan or Providence RI for Regional Service. Also in Mass is Normandy Farms 45 mins from Logan or a small intimate CG Boston Minuteman. Once you head further up into the mountains of Vermont,we stayed at Brattleboro KOA about 45 minutes east of Albany, you then run into small regional and you would have to drive. Bar Harbor Maine has a small airport now linking to larger cities but service is only a few days.We also spent a week in the WHite Mountains at Danforth Bay CG on Lake Ossippee, but thats about 2 hours to Manchester NH airport of 3-3.5 hours to Boston. On balance the North East is pretty easy to drive around.
Just stay off of I95 coming and going and take I81 up before turning east. I95 is a mess on a good day.
    Happy Trails sounds like fun!

What is your definition of "reasonably close to an airport"? I have heard people joke that in Texas, anything within 3 hours is "close" (lol!).

Pretty much anywhere in New England you will be within an hour, certainly within 2 hours, of a large airport. In northern New England you are starting to get away from airports.

Northern New York, there is Lake George and at its northern end is Fort Ticonderoga, which I highly recommend if you have any interest in colonial history.

Thanks for the question! My driving 'tolerance' would be less than 2 hours to an airport.
  • During the summer in Maine you have puddle jumper service to Boston, NY, Philly. Portland used to have daily service to Houston, but that was a long time ago. Bangor has pretty good service to a lot of places (it has a B-52 runway), and weird places like Bar Harbor have summer puddle jumpers. Open a compass up to 100 miles on your map, and draw circles from the airports. Then camp in the circles, for a 2 hour drive. I really like "Down East", for reversing falls, Big Sow whirlpool and my favorite soft shelled lobster, just eat with your fingers, no tools required.

I lived in Houston (Lake Jackson) and worked in Maine for a year.
  • I'm getting the heck out of the Houston area this summer as well. We're gonna try Michigan since we'll be in Ohio for a NASCAR race mid July. Looking at Accuweather historical averages, its 60-80 in Muskegon MI. Somewhat better than 80-100 in our native Houston.
    Hopefully New England next year.
