Hitch capacity

My friend is needing a favor from me.my Reese hitch is a 16k and he is needing a grand design brand momentum toy hauler moved from San Angelo to gilmer.the specs say it has a 18k+ GVWR but it has only (2) 8000lb axles.
My truck is plenty enough able but I have a great reluctance since my hitch is only rated for 16k.i told him he might just need a delivery service.his son lives in this one and a deal or delivered to the present spot.
Anybody towing one of theseand if so what hitch.safety 1st.

    Hi,

It is 18,000 GVWR, but the overall trailer weight should be less than the GVWR.

Do not load it up, and it should be well under 16,000 pounds 'empty'.

    Fred.

    I like this answer
  • If it was a couple of miles from one spot to the other I would do it

BUT Gilmer is 347 miles from San Antonio.
    No way!!!

Have your friend contact an RV transport company or find someone else with a 20K or higher rated hitch
  • Well and good for an empty rig ---- But if you read the post, his friend's son LIVES in it.
    Art.
  • I would do my friend that favor, an unloaded Momentum will not be 16K. Help them out, they will owe you a favor.
  • Grand Design shows a 13,800# dry and 18,000 GVWR.

Vehicle weight is pin weight plus axle weights. Your hitch should be rated in excess of the actual towed vehicle's weight.

Your 16,000# hitch should work if they have not loaded the trailer past 16,000#. A trip to the scales would be in order. We added around 1,500# to ours so if someone has been living in it, you probably need a larger hitch.

The scale will answer your question.

  • Time for a new hitch. Curt 24k would be a great choice.

    Thanks!

  • It is like playing the lottery, sometimes you win, sometimes you loose.

Which do you think you will get?

It depends on which Momentum also. The smallest has a GVW of 18,000lbs, the other 2 are 19,500LBS gvw.
