Hitch for WW SLC 3505 and Ram Megacab

Hi all.

What is a good hitch to use with this hauler and a Megacab? I've been searching and although not new to RV's this would be a first 5er. With the lack of factory clearancing on the TH and shortbox of the mega I'm a little lost as to what to buy.

My coworker has hit his cab twice with his mega and 5er and I'm a bit fearful to ruin my rig. I have not bought the TH yet but pretty settled on a 5er as our next rig as we have a big growing family 3 boys and us with lots of toys so the larger size and capacity of the 5er makes more sense over a 35' TT..

Thanks for your time and Merry Christmas!

7 years on mine and love it...wouldn't go any other way.

    well worth the $!
  • Thanks for all the responses!!

5er fell through the dealer just wants too much for a near 10 year old hauler.

Search is still on and opening up to class A's since haulers are are rare in Oregon for a decent price and I have lots of toys to haul.
  • Sidewinder

I have this installed on our 5th wheel and have the same truck as you. I have been completely sideways with no fear of hitting the truck. Well worth the money.

The short bed on the Mega is the same 6' 4" bed on all 2500/3500 Dodges trucks. I have a short bed quad cab and have a manual sliding hitch. The hitch has been in two short bed Dodge trucks for over 14 years and no problems.

Some of the new trailers have a rounded/notched front corners which helps turning clearance issues between the cab and the trailers front corners. There are all description of profiles between the 5th wheel trailer brands. One isn't the same as another so check each one out.

Reese has a Sidewinder 5th wheel hitch that eliminates the need for a slider in a short bed with up to 19k capacity.

Also check out the Reese 5th Air Bourne Sidewinder if your looking at a air ride hook up.

One point here; your going to get input from GM and Ford owners with short bed trucks and what works for them. What works for one brand most of the time doesn't work for other brands (truck or trailer).
GM for example has a longer dimension between the back of the cab and the trucks rear axle which eliminates the need for a sliding hitch in many cases. Pay attention to what other short bed Dodge/Ram owners are using.

    Great advice. I second.

Same here, six years on my Pull Rite superglide. Works great.

  • I have a pull rite and it works great.

I think you could go with a traditional hitch if you fifth wheel has the extended tongue.

I have been contemplating to go with the b&w companion. Because when I updated my truck I had to use a adapter on top of another adapter. To me it looks like a disaster waiting to happen and takes so much bed space.

This past summer I did see a mega cab using it but wasn't able to talk with the owner.

  • I have the PullRite Superglide on my Mega, never worry about hitting my cab. A little expensive but worth the piece of mind.
  • I have a Demco Hijacker Auto Slide with my short bed.
    Works as advertised.
