Hitch Recommendations

Howdy folks --

Looks like we are transitioning to a 5th wheel and I'm trying to get educated on hitches. I've been reading/searching a bit, but thought I'd ask for recommendations -- w/o saying which one I'm currently favoring *cough* B&W *cough* :)

My parameters are:
  • Ease of removal (I need to use my bed regularly) - preferably by 1 person (relatively fit 40 something)
  • Ride quality
  • Build quality

Thanks!

  • Just make sure what ever you get, exceeds the 5er you're getting. And remember, many of us upgrade within a few years to a bigger and heavier 5er, so get a hitch that will allow for upgrade without needing a new hitch too.
  • If your truck is a short bed then I'd opt for the Pullrite Superglide auto sliding hitch. The entire hitch comes out easily using pins so no need to unbolt anything. No tools required for removal or re-installation. The head assembly comes off separate making it easy for one person. Mounting rails are under the bed. Everything else comes out, slide rails and all leaving your bed completely clean.

One method of removing easily is to simply pull the bottom pins while your 5'er is hitched up. Then lift the trailer leaving the hitch on the king pin.
  • Another vote for the B & W. Have used them for many years on Fords, Dodges and GM, in both G/N & Companion configurations. They are well made, easy to use, low maintenance, and very versatile with an application for every truck.
  • I have the B & W Turnover ball and the companion hitch. Leaves the bed clean (no rails) when removed. And it's made in AMERICA
  • I have the B&W Patriot rail based hitch. I can get it out by myself if I take the head off 1st.

my new to me truck had rails already

  • You didn't mention if your truck has a FW prep kit installed, or how long the bed is. The size of the FW would make a difference on the hitch needed. You may want a hitch that uses under bed mounting, so there are no rails in the bed when removed.

I have a B&W in my truck, and like it, but there are many good hitches.

  • I had the same criteria. Opted for the B&W and am able to get it out by myself and I am soon to be 65.
  • I bought a used Hijacker....The bed rails stay in the truck and are about 1 inch tall. The hitch itself is quite heavy, but can be separated inot 2 pieces. I am 61 and can lift it out.
