hitch replacement help

Recently, due to the Valley fire in California, my wife and I are force to become full timers. My fifth wheel hitch was in the garage but my Puck rail was still mounted in the truck. I saved the truck but that's all. Luckily the trailer was stored in a commercial storage lot that was also saved from the fire. Now I have to decide if I purchase another Reese 16k or some other brand. The Reese served me well but was quite noisy. I have a side winder pin box on the 5er so finding the proper wedge will also be an issue if I change brands. Any suggestions. Please, this is a very serious question I would like to hear your opinions, but please, no brand bashing.
Thanks for you help.

Sam
  • Thank you all for the well wishes and information. Hopefully we will get up to Cobb in the next day or two. We feel we were much luckier than most. We have the 5er.

Cmeade. Thanks for the report. Is 175 open through Cobb. I am in San Fran waiting until Cobb opens up but info is really hard to get. This evening we did find a list of damaged or destroyed properties and our house is the only address missing from the list on our street. Now we have hope again that we didn't lose it.
  • When our house burned, I got truck, hitch and trailer out. For me having a simple, ez to remove hitch worked out great, I can't tell you the number of times it went in and out of the truck while I was rebuilding. If I had to make a decision today, I'd consider the Andersen Ultimate, but not sure it will work with your puck system. If not, then get a used, simple hitch to get you by in the short-term (can always be re-sold) and make your final purchase decision til later. If your situation is anything like mine was, there are plenty of decisions to make and things to do.

OTOH, I considered myself very fortunate compared to my neighbors. They lost their only house and had to live in motels, etc. I still had my second home, the RV to live in.
  • As of 2 pm Sunday 175 from Salmina rd to 29 opened up. Still no travel from Salmina thru Cobb. 175 closed from Dry Creek (Middletown) to Salmina. I drove thru yesterday delivering water and meals to national guard an LEOs. Noon yesterday 29 was opened from Lower Lake to Middletown. No left or right off 29 except for Butts Canyon and Hartman Rd.
  • Thanks Cmeane for your help up on the mountain. I am headed up tomorrow to get mail and check on the 5er. Its been stored in Lower Lake.

And thanks Dayle1. Sorry to hear about you house. Actually didn't think about picking up a used hitch. May not be a bad idea.
