How big?

Hi,
I'm new to this site, but could use some advice. Currently we tow a 26BHS travel trailer with no problems. We are about to purchase a Grand Design 5th wheel and want to be sure that it isn't too big for us to enjoy.
We have a 2013 F350 diesel 4 wheel drive 6'6"bed.

The 5th wheels we are considering are:
Reflection 337RLS: 36'1"L, 96"W, 12'4"H, 13,995GVWR
Solitude 305RE: 35'11"L,101"W,12"9"H, 16,000GVWR
Solitude 368RD: 18'11"L,101"W,12'9"H, 16,000GVWR

We currently are long weekend and short vacation campers in Michigan. We think that we would like to try an extended trip around the country.

Two questions:
I plan to buy a Pullrite sliding hitch - any comments?
I think the 368RD is too long for us to enjoy - especially backing into our driveway - but does the additional 3' in length make that much difference? Does the Reflection"s 2000# lighter weight make a big difference?

Thanks for the help.
Bob
  • Did you face any challenges in parking or maneuvering your TT? This should be your guide to a longer unit.

You do not provide weight info on the TT and whether you were using a weight distributing hitch. This would help you gauge the effects of the 5th wheel weights.

I have enjoyed the Pullrite 24K. Put in storage when not in use, keep clean and lubed. Do not have loose debris in bed when towing. Applicable to ALL sliding hitches.
  • You are going from a travel trailer to a fifthwheel. Different ballgame all together when pulling. You can put that longer fifthwheel into places much easier than your travel trailer. You can turn it on a dime, especially with the shorter truck. Where does the fifthwheel fit in relationship to your max towing weights is where I would be thinking.
  • We did long weekends and short vacations and up to 7 weeks in our 30' fiver no problem. Think we will enjoy the extra 3 feet in our new Reflection 303RLS. Have only been out once but are glad we didn't too much bigger.

Be sure to check out theGrand Design Owners forum if you have not yet seen it.
  • Do you have an SRW? Or DRW? Those two larger ones MAY have too much pin weight for an SRW. Possibly even the lighter one. Need to check those numbers for the loaded pin weight and the truck rating carefully before going too big.
