I have a similar question and am considering Michelin 235/85/16 Ribs which are 32" OD. I could use an extra half inch to level the trailer. My question is how much suspension travel is there on a trailer? My overhead clearance is not that much. I do have TorFlex axles.
"Not that much" For leaf springs 3-4" is the common requirement. Do not know much about TorFlex axles. The manufacturer should have a recommendation. With a very little bit more math and a tape measure you can see for yourself - Irelands_childExplorerAspect ratio and diameters are supposed to be determined by that size figure cast in on the sidewall rubber. In the real world, you need to look at the tire manufacturer's website for the specs for the tire you are interested in using. Also, the Tire Rack website, which I use as my 'font of tire information' and occasional purchase point will have most of the popular brand tires and a few trailer tires listed.
- buckyExplorer IISlightly wider is correct. By 10 mm. The 245s that is.
- Michelle_SExplorer IIIGo to the Tire Mfr site, most will give you all the specs for their tires, including OD.
- fj12ryderExplorer IIICheck the specs on the tire you are thinking of buying, they should list diameter, then check what the diameter of the tire you presently have. Even though a tire may show the same size, i.e. 235/85x16, they may not be the same physical size. Your best bet is to measure your present tire and go from there. And don't forget to consider suspension travel when figuring overhead clearance.
I went from 235/80x16 and 3 1/2 inches of clearance to 235/85x16 and now have about an 2 inches of clearance. - Me_AgainExplorer III

245 75s are a good option too. Same load rating, slitely narrower.
Slightly wider!
Sailun makes the S637 all steel ply tire in a ST235/80R16G that is the same size as common maypops.
Chris - Me_AgainExplorer IIIFirst measure center to center between the axles, you need at least 33". Then check your clearances above the tires. Chris
