I Don't Know What My Truck Can Tow!

I have a 2007 Dodge Ram MegaCab 1500 with the 5.7L HEMI.

I'm seem to get lost doing the math on what I can actually tow for a 5'VR. And since it's a shortbox, am I gonna have issues towing a 5'VR?

I am soooo confused. Guess that's why I'm a newbie, huh? ;)

  • Oh goody..more math...LOL

    So if I can tow 7400# that would be the trailer and the load in the trailer.

    Then, I have to understand my truck's weight with fuel, passengers and gear; add that to the 7400# tow rating and factor in the GCWR, right?

    With 3.73 Axle Ratio Axle Ratio You Can Tow 7750 lbs

    Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) = 8510 lbs
    Payload = 2422 lbs
    Curb Weight = 6088 lbs
    Curb Weight Front/Rear = 3358 lbs/3358 lbs
    GAWR Front/Rear = 4750 lbs/6010 lbs
    Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) = 14000 lbs

    14000 - 8510 = 5490

    So really, with a loaded truck I can tow 5490?
  • You'll find that almost everyone will advise against trying to tow a 5ver with a 1/2 truck. The smaller trucks lack the power to pull a 5ver, especially up hills, and also lacks braking ability to do an emergency stop safely. Not everyone will agree with this.

    If you google "dodge 1500 towing guide" you'll probably find the towing specifications on your truck. The payload is most often the limiting factor.
  • Take a look at the sticker on your door jamb. Should list axel ratings and GVW / GCVW
