I want to add a entry door in the rear wall of our 5th wheel

I am looking for tips from anyone who may have done this before. We are getting ready to remodel the rear bunk room (remove the three bunks) of our 5th wheel and make an office area.

The rear wall has had some minor water damage that I am going to repair and while doing so I was considering adding a entry door so we can walk out to a deck when back up to our parking space.

I am interested in finding a used entry door....maybe even a slider...where are suggestions to look for one?

Thanks,
Phil

  • A friend hasd a toy hauler over looking the Deschute River in Central Oregon befor he built a cabin on the property. He framed in a patio door like Roger suggested, then would pull up the door to protect it whil away. The only time the trailer moved was when they sold it. What they loved was the view it gave them then when there the back ramp was their deck.

I guess this is your floor plan... Its called a LE model but has the 2BH added to it.. Post your floor plan and perhaps this might give others on here something to shoot at... This slide out for the bunk beds would be a great spot to mount the second entry door but would probably make a better full size office desk with hutch. The killer for me in this floorplan would be the location of the rear bath setup...

If yours has the bath room in that same area I would think placing the entry door on the patio side would be best move...

I see alot of TRAVEL TRAILER models with two entry doors but don't think I have ever seen that on a fifth wheel setup. I notice the new models have a second door but most of them is to gain entrance to the bath room without going thru the whole trailer... I suspect the rear kitchen models makes a second door in that area ideal.

Modifying the REAR of the trailer you would have to deal with the safety lights and rear bumper and spare tire most likely.. This would most likely get in the way of your slide out steps arrangement...

My fifth wheel was just for the two of us and has the super large full rear window and this is where the nice large sitting chairs are located. I would sure miss having the nice view out over the lake when parked...

    Just some of my thoughts

If this is your floor plan the logical place to start would be take the window out and replace with a door.
Need some dimensions of both to get started.
I would not put in a "house" door. That would be the death knell of ever being able to sell, if you wanted to, in the future.
  • Thanks guys

We do stay parked in one spot for extended periods of time and I had considered a regular house door...but think I would rather go the rv door look if at all possible.

I think I will take the advice and check out some of the salvage yards.
  • Start by getting a quote from several RV repair facilities.

Discuss how they would accomplish the modification.
    (Remember the details..;)..)

Then decide if you want to DIY or pay to have it done.

IMO - shouldn't be that difficult as DIY if planned well.

  • Are you parking it permanently or will you move it regularly? If permanent I would get a regular house patio door. If you are mobile I would think you would want a RV type door. If the latter I would try some of the RV salvage places around Elkhart, IN. or White Pigeon, MI. There are several in the area and you are not too far away so you might want to take a trip and see what you can find.
  • Thanks Roy,

I'm not sure I know how to post my floorplan...maybe when my daughter stops by I can get some computer assistance :)

My floorplan is very simlar to the one you posted but we don't have the second bathroom...(wish I did though).

We had two bunks in the slide room that I have removed and installed the sleeper sofa from our front room....that way there is extra sleeping space if/when we do need it. I also removed two bunks from the opposite wall and am building a desk for that wall.

I want to locate the entry door in the center of the rear wall so we can walk out onto a deck I am building. I am hoping to find a door with alot large glass window so we can have a view outside at all times.

    Thanks,
    Phil
