I77 West Virginia/advice

Be on the watch I77 Virginia MM1-10 Fancy Gap Mountain Area often has dense fog, many accidents when foggy..........The Virginia part from MM1 to the I81 intersection is the worst for heavy truck traffic. Wythe County VA gets plenty of revenue off the interstate they can be everywhere :)

We are a few hours away, but we are expecting snow again on Friday night and Saturday, changing to rain late in the day when it's SUPPOSED to get above 32 degrees. It's again supposed to snow on Sunday.

With that being said, the interstates should be kept in pretty good shape, but if it starts snowing hard and the traffic is light, snow will pile up on the interstates and there are some good size hills to traverse through and around. I-64 and I-77 are good roads with a max of 7% grades, but there are some on each of these roads, which haven't changed since you pulled on it the last time.

If it begins to snow in earnest, I would pull off and find someplace to veg for a while or overnight, if needed. Take lots of warm clothing and some supplemental heating, bottled water to flush with (who cares if the black tank freezes, it should have plenty of expansion room), and take the time that you need to arrive safely.

Went down I-77 south last March. From Cleveland to Columbia where we pick up I-85 south. Pulle my 35 foot Chaparral. We had descent weather just cold. No issues what so ever. I never go very fast, kept speed around 63 MPH. Fancy Gap was no issue either.

Can't tell you much about I-64.

Use WV511 for current road conditions. This site has cameras along the route that you are asking about. Right now the roads are not in very good condition as far as weather.

If coming north you need a place to stop in Virginia, Wytheville I believe I-77/I-81 is Ft. Chiswel campgrounds. Nice and easy to get in and out.Only about 1/2 mile off interstate. Drive safe and Happy Camping. We are trying to go that way to SC but kind of waiting on the weather.

Just check the weather reports and if they are suspect, don't go. I've been through there where the snow was falling at 3" an hour and sat on I77 for 5 hours after the road was closed for an accident. I'd sit in my RV in a truck stop for a day or two to avoid that, it's just common sense. On the other hand, I've cruised through and enjoyed the scenery far far more times than I've had issues.

Lots of lake effect snow and no campgrounds open that I'm aware of. Hope you have a place to park and plug in the camper. High today was 4 degrees and cold locked in for next week with below zero temps at night. Don't know how long your staying but may want to consider motel this time of year. Randu

You will probably use at least a tank of LP a day trying to keep it warm.

We had our 35 footer in -10C (about 25 F) for a week and used more than 100 pounds of gas. We had hay bales stacked around the trailer as skirting to keep the wind out from under it and still never did get really comfortable.

All in all a bad idea.
