I use Velcro as well, it helps insure that the plug doesn't slip off the tab on the cover.

Cover should be spring loaded to snap shut, plug should have a tab on top. Lip on cover locks tab in place and secures plug. If both parts are well maintained the plug should be secure.

A couple times I never got the plug pushed in far enough to let the lid catch the back of the plug, was just sitting on the very edge of the tab ,and not going down to secure the plug. Caught my mistake after a couple times, that could be the OP's problem not getting it pushed in far enough to allow the spring loaded lid to catch the plug

The spring on the cover of mine is broken, and it would be a titanic pain in the butt to remove the socket from my custom fiberglass bed. I stole an elastic hair "scrunchy" from DW and double looped it around the end of the umbilical plug. When I hook up, I pull the scrunchy over the lid of the jack to hold it down onto the plug. Problem solved! Well, not solved exactly, more like "detoured around", but the end result is the same - my cord doesn't come out anymore. :D

I have always used an in bed plug, never once a problem. I would just replace the plug, the cost is not enough to be concerned with.

X2. Maybe you need a new plug.

I have always done things basically one way....if it's broke fix it instead of 'band aiding' it

Replace the receptacle and/or umbilical cord plug.

I think your receptacle needs replacing. Go to a place like Auto Zone and buy a new one and install it yourself. I think the spring on your present receptacle is bad.
