Inverter Question

Do they make inverters that will plug into a cigarette lighter plug? Behind my T.V. cabinet there is a cigarette plug that supplies 12 volt power. It would be nice if I could plug a inverter into that plug to power my tv and satellite box. Thanks.

I wouldn't say a must, but, your chances of its working without noise or interference with your stuff is much better. Besides, who wants to push dirty power thru your expensive electronics? Some do, but not me.

I'd rather put a few bucks more into the inverter instead of my pocket.
  • Thanks dahkota!

Is a pure sine inverter a must? Looks like there are several inverters out there under $100 unless they are advertised as Pure Sine.....
  • Those cigarette plugs can carry 150 watts which is more than enough for a satellite box and 19" lcd tv. I would get a 200-300W inverter. I use a 400W and used this set up dozens of times with no problems. If the outlet only carries 150W, the inverter will only supply 150W. I have not had tv interference but will note that some inverters can have very loud fans.
  • Behind my T.V. cabinet there is a cigarette plug. Most of those cigarette plug wires are not big enough to carry the load of most inverters. You be better off wiring it straight to the battery with a larger gauge wire.
  • The inexpensive ones I tried before going "whole house", caused interference on the TV and the fans were obnoxiously loud. Whole house need not be expensive or very difficult to install.

Any way you could help with a link. I have had no luck finding one.........
Go to amazon, type 'inverter', page 1.
  • How many watts do you think would be needed for the satellite box and 20 inch LED tv?

  • There are smaller inverters as you describe, they can be purchased at Wal-marts and auto parts stores. Just ensure that you do not exceed the amperage that the cigarette lighter plug is rated at.
