You don't use enough clutch to cause the motor to move, there's way too much inertia/compression. You just need to "help" the front brake some. This is my theory though since the Wing has an electric reverse that locks in the starter motor when engaged.
However, however lower compression engines (like H-D) WILL turn backwards. I did it to both DW's and my bike before I learned the clutch / engine running technique. Fortunately there was no damage.
Not sure how your electric reverse affects turning engine backwards. Maybe you're locking the electric reverse and slipping the clutch against the starter?
Hey, maybe I should do that with DW's trike - put it into reverse gear so that if I spin the engine, it will turn forward! ('course it's a trike so I just use the rear brake to unload).
