is new camper actually new?

So I'm posting this for my father in law as well as myself for future knowledge. He is looking at purchasing a 2013 jayco pinnacle 31 rlts. So almost three months ago he found that camping world in Kingston NY ordered one and would have it soon. Well two weeks ago it finally came in and we went to look at it. I was very surprised when the manufacture date was 11/2012. To me this date listed looks completely wrong and should have something much newer. This place has been very difficult to deal with and he is just about to call the deal off and purchase one over 3 hrs away instead of this place. Does this seem weird to anyone else. He also asked forslide covers to be put on well guess what they weren't so that is what we are waiting for now but the whole date thing really makes me think that they got it from another dealer

  • I agree with what someone else said.....if he's not happy at this point and that build date is bothering him then he's most likely never going to be happy with the camper and it'll be a black cloud. My advice is to not buy it if that's still an option and get a different camper somewhere else. That build date, to me at least, is such a minor thing I wouldn't even have mentioned it. What's important to me is the year on the title. The fact that date is that important means you guys are just looking for things to be wrong which tells me you guys just aren't happy with the dealer. If at all possible just get a different camper and different buying experience.
  • If they've been difficult to deal with and he doesn't even own it yet..Can you imagine it will get any better?..I'd forget them and move on.

He's buying a 2013 camper, as indicated on the Title...and need I point out that the "2014"'s you reference as now coming out are being built in 2013?

As noted above, year-of-manufacture is more often than not the one prior to model/Title year with nearly ALL vehicles.

It's been that way for many years- I have a 1965 Ford Falcon whose decoded VIN indicates that it was built in 1964. But it's still a 1965 Falcon.

It's not new because it was built last November? You haven't noticed that new cars and some trucks are sold 6months+ in the previous year? RV's are no different and often much worse.

Sorry my wording was confusing, I'm more questioning it being a dealer order. He stated talking with them of Feb 24 and the order was supposedly placed a few weeks before that. But I wouldnt expect a build date that early. The other camper he's looking at is a 2012 model and is new. But now that the 14s are coming out he's technically buying a year old camper which hurts resale(he will upgrade within 5yrs). So why not buy one that's a 2012 and save a few more thousand dollars BC your never going to make up that difference in resale. I didn't go into much detail with how difficult it has been dealing with them but that isn't my point here. But they were very reluctant to give any info on this. Also I have had my camper for two months and it was built 1/24/13. This is the reason for date question. Why would a camper "supposedly" ordered in Feb 2013 and completed in April 2013 not be dated for April 2013 and be dated Nov 2012 just doesn't make practical sense to me its like back dating
  • We purchased our 2012 in June of 2011. Manufacturer date was May of 2011. No different than a car.
  • What is the difference in a 2013 titled rig from another dealer or the factory? If it's good deal for the buyer there should be no concerns with the source. Slide toppers are an option item and are often installed by the selling dealer upon request and price agreement.

Howe ever; I would not finalize the deal with the feeling that the seller is difficult and from the tone of your post, not completely trustworthy. Feeling thus, I believe you will never be comfortable with the purchase.

Find a dealer you like and trust, this is too much money to not be at ease with the deal. Good luck in the search.

  • That is a dealer trade no doubt. Manufactures don't build something to stock on their lot for 5-6 months. Most build to a dealer order or a customer order through a dealer. In most places there is a difference between a sold "Customer" order taking priority over a "Dealer" stock order. Randu
