Just an FYI!

I'm like a kid in a new candy store! Been a 5er owner for just over 5 weeks now and realized more and more how much I don't know about these 5er's.

This Fifth Wheel forum is great! You guys are great. I'm enjoying the discussions, the debates, and differences of opinions.

I can only compare my experiences being a former TT owner and user for some 60 years of life. So, this stuff is great!

Just wanted to say "Thanks!" I'm learning so much here. It's kind of exciting to read the discussions with new eyes. I don't recommend everyone going out and switching their RV to a different type. But, really, if your world has become stagnant ... it's a great way to bring excitement back again!

Thanks! I'm also enjoying previous posts.
  • I can understand that.....went from a fifth-wheel to a travel trailer and now I am planning on selling my rv site and trade travel trailer for a truck camper...wow, do I have a lot to learn...at 75...I can do this. Plan is to travel for three years and then re-evaluate. Scary, but exciting.

Good luck to you and yours with the new fifth-wheel. It is a beauty.
  • Welcome to the dark side !!!! I was overwhelmed when I first made the switch from a TT to the 5er back in "08"... The folks here are GREAT, and helped me become a pro... or at least semi pro !! :-) !
  • I made the switch last Spring. By reading and asking questions here and making Google my best friend, the transition wasn't too bad. Glad I made the switch. Best towing experience I've ever had!
  • Our 1st RV was a 06 Cedar Creek 5th wheel. Bypassed the "underclassman" if you will. Driving a semi for a living, well the choice was easy which way to go. Funny thing, when it came to pick up weight capacities, well I was green as a kid holding in cigarette smoke so his Mom wouldn't notice he snuck it. I too, learned a whole lot and still do on this site.

FTG- I'm not a pro, but have played one behind the wheel for 33 years.

As am I.. I still carry my "A" from my days as a "professional".. Drove flatbeds up and down the East Coast... I will not give up that license.. ! Heck, I cut my teeth in the business pulling 60' stretch trailers up the highway
  • At 74 I am relearning the TT stuff again. We currently have both a 5th wheel(Big Guy) and TT(Little Guy). Last TT I had was in the 70's. Then a number of truck campers, and three 5th wheels.

What walks of 4 legs, then 2 legs and finally 3 legs?

I went from the truck camper to the fifth wheel so opportunities for lots of cross training here.

What walks on 4 legs in the morning, 2 legs at midday and 3 legs during the evening?

  • Funny that you feel there so different. But once you make a few adjustments there are more similarities than differences.
Lots of the differences have to do with logistics.
Size of tanks,50 amp vs. 30 amp. Pin box vs. WDH. Storage in large basement vs. storage in truck bed.
In the end you will realize a fiver is just a taller TT that connects to the truck differently.
  • FWIW, I towed enough various trailers and a gooseneck, that I knew from the get-go that I did =not= want a TT, so jumped right into a FW. Knowing what I know now, would I have bought the same truck and FW? Nope. Would have gone SRW 3500 and at least a mid-height FW instead of the lo-pro Komfort we had.
