Kayaks inside TH

We just got a 2016 Vengeance 25V and our toys are (4) 10' kayaks.

How do y'all carry kayaks in the TH garage ... or does anyone? Since we did not get the power lift bunk system for the rear, we have plenty of height and length also.

Some "requirements" ...

1. The kayaks are a step up from entry level, 1 seat, plastic, 9.5'. Similar to the one's you'd see at a large sporting good store. They are not Kevlar or wood, just simple plastic.

2. Our 2 boys need to be able to sleep inside on the fold down sofa things or sleeping bag/camp pads, like when on a several day drive to get to our destination, while the kayaks are still inside. This means the kayaks will need to be suspended off the floor somehow.

3. It needs to disassemble fairly easily/quickly so we can use the inside while set up at campsites and I don't want to futz around with it instead of camping.

4. I was thinking of somehow spanning the inside width with Kindorf and strap the kayaks on top but I don't know how to "cleanly" attach the Kindorf to the walls ... it needs to look decent. It'd be easy to do if I didn't care how it looked.

5. A rack that sits on the floor would interfere with some upper cabinets and, I'd think that it'd take up a lot of room while traveling and when broken down into it parts while camping.

6. I'm thinking the walls can easily support this kind of weight. The 4 kayaks weigh ~168 lbs. together.

Please don't tell my DW that I posted this ... I wouldn't make it through the night!

Thoughts?
  • Could you make a PCV rack, to that stands over the side wall sofas? I'm thinking of something that would have four vertical PVC pipes and ones running horizontal front/back that the kayak would rest on, then use bungee cords to hold in place during transport. Kids could sleep under them too.

Hit up Google with, pvc garage kayak rack, for a lot of pics.

Like this but with longer legs?

The lift bed took up too much ceiling space (ie: I can't walk under the bunk when it was in the up position without REALLY ducking). We also dry camp a lot and it runs on 12v to raise and lower so we'd kill the battery raising and lowering a couple times a day ... need to lower it for the boys to sleep and then raise it in the morning to use the camper/sofa/dinette/back patio deck option.

I was suggesting only using the "lift" for Kayak storage against ceiling then do the bed thing on the couch and floor as you suggested rather than trying to suspend the Kayaks some other way.

  • Too bad you didn't get the "lift" you could have put them on it and raised it up enough to be out of the way. Maybe you still can.
  • I'm curious, why do the kayaks need to be suspended? Couldn't you put a couple blankets down and secure the kayaks to the floor?

Alternately, you could look at suspending netting from the couch / bunk connections on the wall.

    Good Luck!
