Knocking noise from Landing Gear

Has anybody experienced and/or had any luck remedying a sporadic "knocking" noise coming from the landing gear? We had our trailer in at the dealer recently to do the last of the warranty items, and we asked them about the knocking. Both Keystone and Lippert said that it was a "known issue" but not considered a defect, so they wouldn't fix it. We had the dealer replace the fluid, but it still seems to be occurring, albeit less often than before.

Any other ideas? In the end it's not the end of the world but it's annoying when trying to go to sleep since the bed is right above it.
  • Mine just started to pop every 1/2 hour or so on the last outing so I ordered the Cat oil online for 27.50 a quart plus 11.00 dollars shipping. It is pretty annoying when sitting outside. We`ll see if it works.

Ford Truck Guy provided you with really good info.

Better then what you got from Dealer and/or LIPPERT which should have informed Dealer of the 'Fix' ----sheesh

Good grief....BOTH should have that info already since it is a 'known issue'
    :S:S:S

Print out copy of that tech bulletin LIP Sheet 0295
Then give it to Dealer Service Manager and tell them to FIX the known issue as per the Lippert Tech Sheet

The dealer did replace the fluid... we just had to pay them out of pocket to do it, Keystone and Lippert refused :)

Total b.s.! And over a known issue, too.

Yup, they're all pretty much the worst. This is our second trailer, so at least now we don't expect much out of them :)

  • Thanks all, I will have to find out more of the process the dealer did when swapping out the fluid (my husband handled that part of it) And yes, it's 6 point auto-leveling system.

Azdryheat, we will have to try that too, thank you!
  • Great info here gang, thank you!! I'll be talking to our dealer about the LCI instructions and have them update ours to get rid of that random popping noise at 0230hrs!!!
  • I've got the Lippert 6-point leveling system and it pops from time to time. What has fixed it is extending the jacks and spraying a dry lube spray on the jack shafts. No more popping. In a few months I have to repeat.
  • OP hasn't come back to say whether it is an auto leveling system. On my sob
with basic front landing gear my "knocking" noise was the the upper storage
shelf being built right on top of the square equaling rod between landing gear
    legs.

  • IF it is the Lippert 6 point leveling system, there is a note on the fix online..

Basically, you remove 1 QT of the hydraulic oil, and replace it with 1 QT of the names listed below - -

    Solution

Lippert has an approved modification, which involves replacing a quart of the existing fluid with an anti-stiction fluid.

Refer to the Lippert technical fix, LIP Sheet – 0295

Select the link to view the Lippert Sheet - Adding anti-Stiction Fluid

    Introduction

If you experience a popping noise in the Lippert (LCI) Leveling system, Lippert has approved replacing a quart of the existing oil with a quart of anti-stiction fluid. They approved the following fluids:

Caterpillar Hydraulic Oil Additive 1U-9891 (Note – many owners indicate this is the most effective option)
    Torco RFF Grade 15
    Maxima Fork Oil Grade 15

For maximum results, in the shortest amount of time, please follow the preparation and procedure exactly as written below. Failure to follow these steps may result in delayed resolution of the audible disturbance.

    Preparation:
Obtain a clean container, with at least a one (1) quart capacity
Obtain a fluid extraction device - siphon, turkey baster, etc.
Hitch RV to the truck and fully retract all leveling jacks and hydraulic slides
Purchase one of the three replacement fluids
    Fluid Exchange Procedure:
Using the fluid extraction device, remove one quart of fluid from the power unit hydraulic reservoir
Add 1/2 quart of the replacement fluid you selected
Extend all hydraulic slides and leveling jacks fully
Add the remaining amount of the replacement fluid
Fully retract all hydraulic slides and leveling jacks
Run the Auto-Level feature on the Level-Up system, as per the instructions found in the Owner's Manual.
Note: If the popping noise persists, the addition of a second quart may be necessary. Repeat the steps under Fluid Exchange Procedure, in the same order.
