landing leg won't extend

Hi everyone
My driver side (street side) landing leg will not extend. I got the top off of the leg. The shaft from the motor is turning. Both bevel gears are turning. I'm guessing that the worm gear is stripped, or the nut, gear, whatever that the worm gear drives is stripped. Can't find much info on replacing worm gear. Lots on replacing gear box. This is on a '06 Cougar with Venture landing legs. The leg has not been stressed, so there should not be binding. It has been retracted fully, that is how we were told to do it in our PDI. I'm guessing I have learned a lesson.
Should I pursue repairing the leg, or just replace leg?
Thanks
AL

First off, you should almost never fully extend or retract your legs via the motor. The shear pins are weak enough, and the motor has enough torque, to do in the pins every time. Second, you're likely going to have to pull the entire leg to get to the parts you need to more easily. Not sure if it's not just easier to replace the entire leg than to fix the one you've got.

  • the only parts you can buy is the gears on top you can take it out and tear apart could be just a pin sheared if you are mechanical minded it is easy just takes time. It will come out from top. if you take it apart and it is a pin lube screw before putting back. if you need new leg call venture 1-866-365-1957 great people to work with
  • Venture will sell you gears and the shear pins. Most likely, the shear pin has done its job and saved breaking more expensive pieces parts. The shear pin is $0.50 (it is metric as I recall). They will mail you some if you ask. I have a bunch if you were near CA.

P.S. Never, never, never fully extend or retract the legs. Mark them with a line about 1" from the top, and 18" down from the upper line. The leg will extend 19" as I recall but you never want to do that! Stop when you get to the line.
  • OK, now I am curious. Just picked up a 2008 Durango. How do I, without extending/retracting to the limits, find out where the limit is so I can mark the buffer zone.

    Many Thanks
  • X10 on fully extending/retracting. Listen to the motor if you don't have it marked.

As said, take the leg out to work on it. Much easier that way. Been there. Done that a few times now.

Can it be manually cranked down? No. Try putting pressure under the foot & crank/operate.
  • It wouldn't crank down manually. It is now at the dealer being repaired. I'll keep you posted on what they find. btw...Pontiac RV in Ill. told me they have trouble getting the internal parts for the legs. They can replace the shear pin and/or bevel gears. Otherwise it is the entire leg.
  • As I recall, Venture sells shear pins and replacement gear sets (bevel gears, thrust washers, etc.). Anything more is a leg replacement. The good news is a complete leg only costs something like $150. I have a friend who has "broken" a leg three times now (can you spell slow learner?). He paid repair places anywhere from $500 to $1,200 (stealer told him the legs only came in pairs - B.S.) to get them fixed. He *DID* get each of the broken legs back and we did an autopsy on them. All three legs had broken shear pins and nothing else wrong. He now has three spare legs awaiting his next brain f@rt. You can fix this problem for $0.50 and 1 hour of your time.
