larger brakes for 6k axles?

Besides changing over to discs, does anyone know of a little larger brake set up than the standard 12x2 for the 6k axle. I've looked at E-trailer and others but anything that I've found larger requires a 7/8/9k axle.

I'm putting a Pacbrake on my '02 F-250 PSD so I may not need a larger brake...but it's always nice to have them, thanks........Dave
  • I installed 6k brakes on 5k Dexter axles and could have gone to 7k. All the same size and the only obvious difference I could see was larger magnets.
  • Thank you gentlemen for most of the replys, Cummins.....did I say I would rely on my Pacbrake to "STOP" me??? I just asked a simple question about the larger brakes.
  • Brakes for 7K axles are the same as 6K * EXCEPT * for the magnets and lineing material for the shoes.
Bolts right on the 6K axle.
For the few dollars extra get the self adjusters. They do work very well

    Art.
  • Just an FYI. For Alko axles the brakes are the same on 5200, 6000 and 7000 axles. Dexter's are most likely the same.

Rewire the axle area with #12 in a star config and get a MaxBrake if you have an older truck without a good IBC. Chris
  • What brand of axles do you have? How many lugs are on each wheel? Size of wheels?
That would make a difference of what is available.

Don't rely on your PacBrake, they DO help you slow down but they don't STOP you!

Call Dexter and see what they can do for you.
  • Aren't 6K axles 12 x 2 Brakes- I've never seen an upgrade, nor a larger magnet. Please inform me.
  • I believe the next step up would be 3 3/8 x 12 1/4. New backing plate, new drum and magnets, not cheap.

  • I installed the 7,000# brakes on my 6,000# axles. They are supposed to have larger magnets and possibly larger shoes? They bolted right on. I think my biggest brake improvement came after I adjusted the brakes then burnished them in according to the Dexter instructions, then adjusted them again. I can now lock up my brakes on a gravel road which I could never do before...
