Living full-time in toy hauler considerations

We currently have a residential type 5th with the kitchen in the rear which is very good. We were pondering whether to switch to a toy hauler (rapter 300 MP), for full-timing. Its the wife and I and our 2 dogs (70+ pounders).
Using the garage as well a garage (no toys to haul), for the dogs/man cave during football season. don't know if the rapter 300 has the ramp patio option but that would be nice.
our two "kids", currently sleep on their bed in the middle of the living room, as they move too much at night to sleep with us haha.
we travel few months of the year, and rest we stay in our campsite in fl. though looking at travel/work (telegraphist), with travel co.
any thoughts from those who currently ft in rapter appreciated or toy hauler in general.

thank you.

They don't mass produce these. They basically make them when you order them.

Thanks for the info I've re-added them to The Complete List of Toy Haulers again.

Are they back in production? I have a tough time figuring out if they are actually making them or not. For a while there was nothing on their website, but now I see they have their own page.

We were interested in the LX450, and have been talking with the western rep up in Washington, and he said they would get the pictures of that on their site soon. We waited several months, I finally called their HQ and talk with someone there and he said he would send me pictures. He did after a couple of days and then about a month later added them and more to their fullhouse page. And this was about the time that Thor Ind. bought them.

  • We have a 2014 Cyclone 4100 King that we live in from April thru November. After just over a year with it, I can safely say we're happy with the choice. We have the garage set up as a second living room that doubles as a bedroom when the grandkids stay with us.

We bought it new and were happy to deal with only a handful of build quality issues. Many of the plumbing connections were loose and dripping, but hand tightening them solved all of the issues.

The four way water valve in the connection bay failed and was replaced under warranty. We also didn't like the way the AC Units were wired. You can only run 2 at a time and they were wired to that the garage AC was always switched on and you could toggle between the LR and BR units. We told out dealer this was not good and that we wanted the LR always on with the toggle switch set up to choose between the BR and Garage. They re-wired it for us at no charge.

Other than those items, we have had no issues whatsoever. VERY HAPPY with the Cyclone.
  • We will hopefully be fulltiming by the end of this year. We have been researching toy haulers for over a year (we have a RZR). We are looking for something that will withstand staying in it full time.
We owned a Attitude back in 2006,(sold it a couple of years later when the kids started to do their own thing) and there is no way that one would have withstood the test of time.
We have narrowed it down. We did look at the Momentum 388 mclass, but we were very disappointed in the workmanship and quality. Hoping to look at the DRV fullhouse (can't find any here in California), so it is now between the Cyclone and the Fuzion, but the larger showers and floor plan are favoring the Cyclone. Need the Artic package as we will be staying in the deserts quite a bit.
Would love to hear from others.
  • We've full-timed in a Momentum 380TH that's 42.5' long with the 10' Garage. I had a 3rd AC installed so the garage is as cool as I want it in the summer, and it is also ducted from the furnace (though in winter we supplement with a space heater when needed). Once our motorcycle is off-loaded, the garage get's turned into living space. I'm a Ham radio operator, so have a desk with my radios back there and also set up a table for my wife to sew when she wants. We also have a separate TV and stereo system in the garage.

As far as site availability, we've been at this for close to a year and have had very little issue finding sites long enough to accommodate us. We have had a couple of time we had to offload the bike and were unable to leave the back porch out, but that has been the exception. We are picky about where we stay as this is our home - we're not just weekend "camping".

For us, if we had to do it all over again, we'd still choose a TH for our current lifestyle as we ride our GoldWing most every day. YMMV.
  • We were looking for a toy hauler that would easily support full-timing and went with a Grand Design Momentum 385TH. The insulation is much better, there is a factory option for a 3rd AC in the garage, and there is plenty of storage including a real pantry. It has a 12'2" garage with a reasonable TV and sound system, which is plenty of space for our current Polaris RZR 800EPS and future RZR 4 900EPS. It would make a great work space if not being used as a garage, and it does have the option of using the ramp as a patio.
  • Biggest issue I have witnessed with folks in toyhaulers was ability to find CG site where ramp could be opened.

Basic idea behind toyhaulers was 'boondocking' and having a site large enough to open ramp was not an issue.

Pull thru sites could work.......back in sites not so much IF using developed CGs
  • choosing a rig is based so much on personal preferences, its hard to say. folks fulltime in cargo vans and Casitas, but I couldn't.
I have Raptor and like it, but its only used part time for trips when I take my toys along. When I fulltimed I was in my class A motorhome, which is still my primary RV.
The garage area will be handy for 2 big dogs. My caution would be that the heating/cooling in the garage area is very weak. Although heat & AC is ducted into the garage, its at the end of a long run of duct and unless you partially close off the living area outlets, very little gets to the garage. In Fl you'll want/need the optional 2nd AC unit(BR) and possibly a 3rd for the garage. The insulation levels provided by Keystone are not the best for extreme heat or cold.
As far as the patio feature, my understanding was it was an option available on all Raptors. I wasn't interested in the patio for mine, so didn't look into the details.
  • If I ever fulltimed again I would have to have a toy hauler either in a 5er or MH. No big toys but need a nice hobby room & tv. I really like the ones with the large back porch.
