Looking at a Highland Ridge, need some help.........

Ok, It's 35ft 10in. Unloaded weight is 8900lbs. Looks good, getting ready to trade in my F150 2.7 for a 2016 F150 3.5......What does everyone think? Model is 315BHS.

Thanks,
Jim

Go to a Ford dealership, and look at the weight sticker on the drive 's door, of a truck just like what you want. Find the actual cargo capacity of that truck (gross weight minus empty weight). From that number subtract 200# for a hitch, the weight of all the people you plan to carry, and any gear you will carry in the truck. What's left is how much pin weight you can carry. Multiply that by 4.5 and that is how much the gross weight (not empty) of the trailer you can tow, legally.

This works for any truck. It's how much pin weight you can carry, that determines the size of truck you need.
  • It cost about the same and sometimes less to just buy a 3/4 ton as it does to equip a 1/2 ton with all the extra payload and tow packages.
  • Chris, that is me on the other board.... Glad I didn't pull the trigger and just buy the unit. Will have to look and getting the F250 instead of the F150....But, is there an F150 (2016) configuration that would work with this setup?
This is all new to us having camped for "years" in Pups,TT and Class C's.
We like the floor plan and are getting too old to play with hitches any more...

Thanks all, I'll have more questions...

  • Sounds like your looking at the Open Range Light series. They advertise these as 1/2 ton towable 5th wheels and some people have done just that. More have gone to either a 3/4 ton or 1 ton to do it. These trailer tow amazingly well but are pretty heavy.

If you insist on a 1/2 ton at least get one with the Max-tow package preferably with the 6.2 liter engine. The other thing I would do is opt for the gooseneck hitch (Light series is the only gooseneck available from the factory) which will save you hundreds of lbs of cargo weight.

Funny, I just answered this question on the Open range forum to a guy with another screen name and mine is different here (drtnsnw over there)

Good luck, we love our 311FLR

Way, WAY too much for a 150. It's what your truck can =carry= not what it can tow, that's the critical number.

What I think! It is a little much for any half ton. I would go with a one ton if for no other reason you will have enough payload for a heavy pin (1500 plus hitch but probably lots more) plus people and all your other stuff.

Is your new truck a 3/4 ton truck? If not, I would rethink my choice.
