Low profile tool box and fiver

Ones that fit entirely below the top of the rails are sometimes advertised as "Tool Chest" rather than tool boxes. I had one in my short bed Dodge that measured 27" front to rear and never had a problem.

In my current long bed Silverado I have a Pace-Edwards retractable cover with a plywood bulkhead across the bed at 30" from the front. The P-E locks at that position, covering the box, and I can still see the hitch plate.

I have recently installed a 60 gallon aux. RDS tank on my '05 Ram with a long bed but I removed the toolbox and it looks like the picture above and also isn't higher than the rails so I had thought about mounting the box aft of the hitch but there is room ahead of the hitch and behind the tank so I'll temporarily place it ahead of the hitch and go for a little ride in the neighborhood and make a few sharp turns and see if it will work.

Wanted to close the loop on thsi.First, thanks for all the input.

I was pretty sure the narrow low profile from Lowe's would work but no store withing 60 miles stocks it. Ship to store was 2 weeks. Since I understand they are rebadged better built boxes I searched on the better built part number 73010284. Found it on amazon (on sale for $118) with free prime shipping.

Just to be sure I backed the truck in at 90 degrees and with the slope of my driveway the hitch was max titled with the high side under the 5er. Even then I had 4 inches of clearance.

We have the low profile over the bed tool box and have had no issues with two different fifth wheels.

Hey I saw a guy recently with 3" of bed clearance and he said he has never had a problem.

Well there is a "one time" for almost everything... but I've never even come close with this setup :-) . And like someone else stated, it's great having the space having underneath the box.

Bottom line it's nice to have options. I personally want a huge tool box and don't use my Dually for anything but towing or just driving around.

I have a low profile tool box from Lowes on my F250 CC (6.5' bed). It is only about 2" taller than the rail and only about 12" front to back. After seeing that it caused no problems with my 5'er, 3 of my friends went to Lowes to get themselves the same box. I like this better than the in-the-bed version because I can still put stuff on the floor of the bed under the box.
