Low profile tool box and fiver

Looking to put a tool box in the truck. previously I had a box from an S-10 box on welded up brackets that sat flush with the rails.

So now I'm considering a over rail low profile box that sits 3" above the rails.

Since the truck is a long box and the fiver has a curved front is there any real chance of hitting the box

  • I've had a 3" over the rail toolbox for years - with a regular bed - and have not had any issues backing into uneven ground. I should say that level, the fiver rests about 7" above the rails and has a curved nose. With your long bed and if your fiver rests high enough above the rails, I think you should be fine.
  • You don't want ANYTHING over the rails when towing a 5er.

If you want top quality that will last for ever this is a great option, HighwayProducts or ProTech is another quality option. Plan to spent $1,000+ on one of these. Mine is 30" front to back.

This depends! How much rail clearance do you have? Do you have 6" or 9", there is a big difference, do you want to gamble with just 3" as the 5er swings over the box?
I just did a quick measurement on my 8' bed, 54" to pin from front of box, 34" to front of tool box!
I don't worry as my Lowes tool box is only rail high.

I agree. I've used the same Weatherguard floor-mount tool box since 2001, and it still works like new. As does yours, it sits even with the bed rails and does not use up any 5th wheel to bed rail clearance.

  • We have a long bed and have a Dee Zee bed high tool box , works great no problems , had to redo the locks the ones that came with it were cheap and bent so I put hasps and pad locks on it since I keep my Hondas and cords and cables as well as jacks and tools in there . Does limit the use of the truck when not towing but there is enough room behind the hitch up to the tailgate for anything I have needed to do with the truck when not towing

  • If you have a long bed there should be no issue. However if you are concerned, go with one thats just rail high. You won't be loosing that much cargo space. I have a long bed with a rail high tool box and an auxiliary fuel tank in front of it and have plenty of room inside and out.
  • I was going to suggest a toolbox/fuel tank combo but I see you're running a gas engine so.....never mind.
  • I have one of those low-pro box and it has been fine for me with my 5th wheel, plenty of clearance, I have one of the low-pro boxes from lowes on a 2015 gmc 2500hd standard box with a pullrite superglide hitch with the lower brackets.
  • I had one in mine long bed truck when we had a fiver no problem.
