250,000 towable's sold each year. Most with 4 tires. That's 1 million ST tires rolling down the hwy. Factor in a 5 year life span and that's 5 million ST tires rolling around each year. Probably more since many owners just run them till they have issues. I wonder why we read about failure on ST tires?

Because they're lousy tires?
Agreed, the vast majority of ST tires are an accident waiting to happen. However, it's the tire construction and load/speed ratings that really tell the whole story---not the ST designator.
For instance, we purchased a set of Hartland ST 235/85/16 G-rated, all-steel tires. Similar construction and tread pattern as the Sailun. Also weigh the same, hefty 60 lbs. (vs. 35-40 lbs. for the typical E-rated tire of the same size). Have a 14-ply rating, an all-steel carcass, load rated at 4080 lbs., plus a very high N (87 MPH) speed rating (higher than the Sailun). From all accounts, they're made by Gladiator. Not your typical ST tire by any means.
I think the problem starts with the fact that so many manufacturers put Towmax tires on the rigs they build as OEM. These have got to be the absolute cheapest and worst choice for a heavy fiver. They are simply lousy tires. If our trailers came with Maxxis or one of the other better ST tires, we would probably not be discussing this subject near as much.
