I put my cotton balls in a plastic cup so they don't stain anything. It works. It might not drive them out (as some have said) but it will keep them out.
Also try "Cab Fresh". It looks like a big tea bag but it has balsam fir which rodents don't like...Smells like a Christmas tree.
