Mor/Ryde pin box

I've just purchased a new 38' Bighorn 5th Wheel. Having never pulled a 5th Wheel, I'm looking for experienced folks opinions. Should I get the Mor/Ryde pin box installed? Is that something I can install or best done by dealer. What does it actually do?

  • The MorRyde pinbox will dramatically reduce chucking but it does not remove all of it. So if you are looking to reduce the push/pull feeling the MorRyde is the ticket because it is low maintenance. Add an air ride hitch on the truck and air ride on the trailer and you'll be set. Oh, don't forget a compressor.
  • I agree the air ride hitch with a Mor Ryde pinbox would be as good as it gets. But, they are priced accordingly. I have air bags on my truck suspension and they do nothing to help my trailer ride better. With a standard pin box you still have a solid connection between the truck and trailer and all road shocks are transferred to the trailer, not cushioned...JMHO

I have a Trail-Aire with a Tr-Glide jaw. If I was to do it again I would skip the Tri-Glide part and just go with an air ride pin box. Too much clunking and banging for me with that Tri-Glide sliding back and forth. Bottom line is if you have a problem with chucking (front to back motion) go with a Mor Ryde. If you have a problem with riding rough a air ride pin box would help. Yes you can easily install either by yourself. Just set it on some blocks on the end of your tailgate and raise or lower you trailer to line up the holes. No lifting other than to set it on the truck. Shop online you can save a heap over the typical dealer price...

    B.O. furnished good advice, so 2 x 2 on that one too..:W

However - for the size of the trailer, IMO an air ride *hitch* would be a better choice than an air ride pin box. (More air bags).
Stand alone -or- with the MorRyde pin box.

If you want something that will actually help with a larger RV install a Trail Air air ride pin box with a Tri glide.

The Mor/Ryde does what the TriGlide does and that is it. The air ride pin box has a big Firestone air bag that cushions the impact from the RV on the Tow Vehicle.

    Well worth the money!

It may be worth the money ,but does he need it . The fifth wheel in question is much lighter then yours, it's pretty close to the weight of mine, and I do have the Mor/Ryde pin box. I can't see where he would need anything but the Mor/Ryde, mine rides just fine ,with no chucking or rough ride. He is running airbags on the truck, and with a Mor/Ryde pin box he will be set.
