MX Legend Marty Smith's accidental death

Yesterday the news was released that motocross legend Marty Smith and his wife were killed in an accident at Imperial Dunes a few days ago.

There's no sense in repeating all the details since they've been reported so widely online (here's one report).

One lesson that's crucial for all of us here is the fact that he and his wife weren't wearing helmets or harnesses (he had no harness at all and she only had a lap belt).

There's never a good time to ride without our gear. My kids used to try to get away with it when they were just going to putt around camp and they'd ask if it was OK.

Them: "I'm just going to ride around camp, do I really need a helmet?"

Me: "So you aren't planning to crash this time?"

Them: "Right."

Me: "So the rest of the time, you are planning to crash?"

Them: "Uh. No. We never plan to crash. It just happens."

Me: "Right. You never plan to crash, so you should always plan to crash. Put your gear on."

I feel horrible for the rest of his family. His mother had just recently passed away and they are still mourning her loss. And now this. I hope they find peace and healing.
  • Dave thank you for sharing that is very sad indeed, thank you for sharing. Hopefully your comments will remind all of us that we much always be diligent about wearing our safety gear.

Why is this posted in “Toy Haulers”?

Because most of us ride something potentially dangerous that we load into our toy haulers and we shouldn't ever forget how crucial it is for us to wear the proper gear and take proper precautions.

Because many of us were either big fans of Marty back in the day or at least followed the sport.

And on a personal level, because his sister is one of my best friends.

Because the vast majority of Toy Hauler owners have ATVs and other off road vehicles. If you were to start a thread here you will notice the Category has an option for "Toys" hence why Dave shared this information here. Ultimately you can pass by the thread any time.
